The spine and neck are complex structures that facilitate most body movement. This fact makes them prone to inflammation, injuries, and pain. In most cases, the pain improves with pain relievers. However, if the pain does not improve, you need advanced Lakewood Ranch neck & spine treatments like steroid injections and physical therapy.

Factors contributing to neck and spine pain

Neck pain, also known as cervicalgia, is the pain occurring around your neck, making it difficult to turn your head. This pain can be acute or chronic, depending o the underlying cause. The most prevalent triggers of the neck and spine include:

    • Spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a disorder resulting in the narrowing of your spinal canal, exerting pressure on the nerves in your spine. Although some people are naturally born with narrow spinal canals, spinal stenosis can also result from herniated discs, spine injuries, and bone spurs. This disorder can affect any nerve in your spine, leading to pain, numbness, ad tingling sensations.

    •  Herniated disc

A spinal disc is the rubbery cushioning between each vertebra in your spinal cord. When the jelly-like nucleus of the disc protrudes through the rubber exterior, it causes a herniated disc. This disorder causes pain, tingling sensations, or numbness in your neck or spine. Most herniated discs are due to gradual wear and tear. As you age, your discs lose flexibility, making them prone to rupture and tear.

Other causes of neck and spine pain include injuries, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, muscle strains, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and pinched nerves. In most cases, neck pain resolves with rest and painkillers, but if your pain persists or deteriorates over time, you may need professional help.

Diagnostic techniques for neck and spine pain

During your appointment at 360 Orthopedics, the team discusses your symptoms and performs a comprehensive physical examination. They may also review your medical history. Your doctor may use an X-ray, electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction study, or MRI to identify the root cause of your pain. After diagnosis, they may analyze and discuss your results before developing a personalized treatment plan to restore optimal health.

Available treatments for neck and spine pain

Your treatment will rely on the severity and cause of your neck and spine pain and overall health. If your discomfort is due to poor sleeping posture or fatigue, your provider may prescribe muscle relaxers and medicals and advise you to rest adequately. If the pain does not improve, the team may work with a fitness trainer or physical therapist to teach specific exercises to strengthen your muscles and improve flexibility.

If you have chronic neck pain, steroid injections can relieve pain and inflammation. In addition to these treatments, you may need to adopt a few home remedies. Placing a cold pack on your neck causes the narrowing of your blood vessels, relieving swelling and inflammation. A heating pad can also help loosen your neck muscles and improve blood flow. Stress reduction techniques like yoga and meditation can also ease the tension in your body.

To explore more remedies for neck and spine pain, call the 360 Orthopedics office or book an appointment online.
